As a scientific and technological discipline, photonics has evolved from electronics by replacing electrons with photons as information carriers. While it is closely related to optoelectronics, its scope extends far beyond the interface between optics and electronics. Photonics encompasses all technologies and applications involving photons and the generation, transmission, processing, and detection of information.
